On 25 June, ESI was invited to attend the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment and Climate to discuss long-duration energy storage.
Attending were Bobby Smith, Head of ESI, Brian Kennedy, ESI Chairperson and Paul Blount, Chair of ESI’s Long-Duration Energy Storage working group.
Long-duration storage is a key piece of the solution that bridges the gap between renewables and zero-carbon electricity. There are a range of technologies that could meet Ireland’s long-term storage needs.
However there is no investment signal at present for these technologies.
We asked for the coordination of Government, EirGrid, the CRU and industry to put in place the necessary resources and design-work on a framework that ensures the successful delivery of energy storage that can support Ireland’s Climate Action Plan targets and ultimately a zero-carbon power system.
It was great to see the interest from the Committee members and the questions got into some of the technical detail around how we can design a procurement framework that delivers decarbonisation at least cost.
